Once again, for the fourth time in his Arsenal career, Carlos Vela has found himself surplus to requirements at Arsenal and out on loan. This time to La Liga outfit, Real Sociedad.
After being given a starting role on his debut, against Sporting Gijon, Vela was resigned to the bench against Barcelona in what turned out to be a mesmeric result. Real Sociedad battled from 2 goals down to draw up 2-2 before sending on Vela for the final 10 minutes.
Carlos made a decent impact off the bench, running his socks off and forcing Barcelona into several awkward positions. The European champions struggled to pass it out their own half as Vela pressured well. He also was very close to setting up a historic winner but for Dani Alves heading just wide of his own post.
In this small cameo Vela showed, once again, that his technical talents are not up for debate but he must start to impact games further if he is to have a future with Arsenal, or any top club for that matter.

I’m really surprised that he hasn’t gone on to develop into the player everyone thought he would. In his early days he looked like a serious player – I’d say even more promising than Ramsey or Walcott had been. His performance against Sheff United early in his career was nothing short of breath-taking – Chris Morgan tried to kick him all night but he just couldn’t get anywhere near him. The speed, the control, the flicks and the finishes were jaw-dropping. I wonder if Vela has lost a bit of pace – he looks a little heavier in the upper body than he used to.
